Hints on Hindi/Urdu spelling:
Words that can be spelled with doubled a, e and o are spelled with a single a, i and u. Examples: daal, heeng and moong are spelled dal, hing and mung.
- Consonants are not doubled where not needed.
- w is mostly replaced with v. Example: chaval instead of chawal.
- Naturalized and commonly-used English spellings of Hindi/Urdu words are retained even when they do not follow the above rules. Examples: ghee, atta, ajwain.
